Robert Thrower speaking at the Helen Keller Festival

The Tennessee Valley Historical Society has published a journal, now the Journal of Muscle Shoals History, since 1973. Now on its 18th edition, the Journal is full of information about the history of the Shoals, covering topics from Native American history and the early settlement of the Shoals to the impact of both the Civil War and TVA on the area.  Volume XIII through Volume XVIII are currently available for purchase in the TVHS Store. The table of contents for each Journal and sample articles from certain volumes are accessible through each individual Journal’s page.

In the fall of 2012, the Tennessee Valley Historical Society began a partnership with the new Public History program at the University of North Alabama to conduct oral history interviews to capture the diversity of experience across the Shoals. Transcripts of these interviews can be found under the Oral History page.

In The History Corner, readers can learn more about the rich history of the Shoals. Check back frequently for new contributions!
