Peru

The unexpected and expected

Needless to say, this trip has already been filled with dramatic sights and beautiful architecture. It is not surprising that the things my group has seen are extremely surprising. I know that all the UNA study abroad trips are one great experience after another, but why?

The preparation for an excursion like this can be nothing short of taxing. As I sit on 5 a.m. seven hour bus ride from Lima to Nazca, I think about the logistics. Our time is filled with activities of all different types. Every day in the country has been mapped out so the students leaves with an understanding and appreciation of another culture. The Peru study abroad trip is and will continue to be a holistic experience that will ideally lead us to want more and encourage more international travel for UNA students.

There is often a disconnect between university professors and their students. I believe this routes from the fact that the professors role is one of leadership and teachings, and students respect this. I am sure I speak for others on study abroad trips when I say the relationship between student and professor while studying abroad is a different and unique one. You see your instructor outside of the confines of the classroom and get to know them personally while they have the chance to talk and laugh with students. The respect still exist but it does not seem forced, and an organic friendship and can develop.

Going on a trip with nine women, Dr. Infanger has been a great companion and an extremely knowledgeable leader. It is easy to see how hard he has worked to make this trip a very fun and educational study. While Dr. Infanger does own five pairs of Vibram five fingers and wears a new color every day (green is my favorite), he has succeeded in putting together a trip that gets more interesting by the excursion.

Mack Cornwell- I'm a 22-year-old Junior at the University of North Alabama majoring in Marketing and Public relations . I am originally from Montgomery, Ala. but spent years in Europe and Seattle, Wash. while working with Americorps post graduation of high school. I will be spending the summer traveling to Peru, Mexico, France, Brussels, Germany, England, Scotland, and China. I look forward to documenting my travels and hope to encourage other students to further their education through experiential education and academic travel with our university.
