Peru

Churros con Chocolate

After a long day of travel we arrived in Lima. The next day we toured the markets, tried a few restaurants and became familiar with the Miraflores district we were staying in. After a midday snack, I am now convinced “churros con chocolate” should be the 8th wonder of the world. And then we got to do the fun stuff.

Chocolate con ChurrosOur afternoon began atop a double-decker bus as we toured the capital. We saw some amazing sights but one of the most amazing things was experiencing Peruvian traffic on the second story of a bus. It was simultaneously terrifying and awesome. When we finished the tour we were given the chance to go exploring in individual groups. A few of the more adventurous travelers decided to go parasailing. Those of us that value life on the ground decided to go visit the ancient ruins of Huaca Pucllana.

The tour of the ruins was incredible! We learned so much about the civilization. A few of the more interesting and gruesome things we learned were that babies were believed to be connected to spirits therefore babies were sacrificed when people died so they could lead the others into the next life. Also, beer was considered sacred, so when people became drunk off of their alcohol it was believed that they were communicating with gods.

Two Days in Lima

Overall, today was a blast. What started out as homesickness ended with tons of laughter and memories that will last a lifetime. I can already tell this trip will be one of the best experiences of my life.

Anna is a senior studying Spanish and after graduating in December, plans to pursue a Masters degree in Spanish or Spanish Education. She hopes this trip will allow her to push herself and put her on the road to becoming a translator.
