Peru

Octopus, Beef Hearts and Churros

It has been C-R-A-Z-Y! But I’m loving every minute of it. We have visited a few different museums including the Museo Larco yesterday and a museum that was located in an old bank today. Lima has 43 districts and I feel like we have walked through all of them on foot by now (being a little dramatic, I know… The districts are pretty big, though…Lima has a population of about 10 million!) The buildings are beautiful and so colorful- I especially liked the ones in the colonial district. I think strolling around in the evening/night is one of my favorite things to do because everything and everyone is so laid-back, you can smell all the restaurants and you can usually find someone playing music.

Last night we went to the Parque Mágico del Agua. This place was super cool. They had all kinds of fountains with different lighting and shapes and figures and they had some that would move and change. They even had a few that were like games that you could try to make it to the center of the fountain-like area without getting sprayed or wet and then you had to try to make it back out dry. I think everyone I saw nearby was pretty much soaked from head to toe. However, the coolest one was the last fountain. It was huge and seemed to look pretty normal but then they started playing music and a show- ON A”SCREEN” MADE FROM THE WATER SQUIRTING UP FROM THE FOUNTAIN. It was amazing!

The food has been really good, too. The coffee served at the hostel has been some of the best I have ever had. Last night, we went to the mall that is built into the side of a cliff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean for dinner. We tried one of the traditional drinks called chicha morada (it tastes similar to grape juice but also kind of like a cider…) and also beef heart! It was really good but kind of hard to chew. After that, we decided we wanted chocolate and churros so we headed to place that had the best, according to Dr. Infanger. I think he was probably right, too. The churros were perfect and the chocolate was at a consistency that was too thin to be like pudding but almost too think to drink. You could almost stand up the churro in the cup of chocolate. It was a perfect way to end the evening.

For lunch today, a few of us went to a restaurant for ceviche and seafood. I tried octopus, squid and some mystery fish for the very first time today. After I got over the texture of the tentacles, I decided that the taste wasn’t so bad. I am just so amazed at the variety of all the food and it’s all good.

This evening we went over a district into Barranco. We hung out on the “Bridge of Sighs” for a while, shopping, listening to music, talking with the locals and watching the sunset. I’m pretty sure that I could have stayed there forever and I am definitely planning on going back. We got to see a tiny bit of the nightlife there but it was still pretty early and it is a Thursday night, so… But I hear that it is a great place to be if you like nightlife and music/dancing.

Tomorrow we have to be up and ready to get on the bus at 5:45 AM… this should be interesting…

We also visited the catacombs today… I’ll post pictures from that and the others things later on…

Hey hey! My name is Andrea Watson and I am 23 years old. I just graduated with a BA in Spanish and International Studies. I have had the opportunity to travel to different areas of the world and to study abroad twice in Costa Rica, so I could not pass up a chance to go to Peru. I love learning about cultures and I love meeting new people. Hopefully, with the Spanish that I know, I will be able to make some connections with the locals and gain a little insight on what it is like to be a Peruvian. Also, we are going to be seeing some amazing sights that I have heard are breathtaking! I cannot wait to see it all and to share it all! So... ¡Vámonos!
