Welcome to SPIC-MACAY @ UNA

Hi!  SPIC-Macay UNA was formed in the Fall of 2007 for the sole purpose of bringing Indian classical music to UNA and the Shoals area.  UNA has now joined an elite group of universities  with the creation of a SPIC-MACAY chapter.  For a partial list of universities with SPIC-MACAY chapter please click here.

SPIC -MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth) seeks to conserve the richer nuances of the diverse Indian cultural values, primarily through an awareness of the deeper and subtler values of the classical arts, rituals, mythology, and philosophy among youth. Using the medium of classical music, folk forms, crafts, yoga, meditation, films, theater and talks; and through direct interaction with the doyens of art, and the people with real depth and knowledge, SPIC-MACAY tries to initiate and nurture a thought process in the youth of today.

We are very proud to present our first event.  This event is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Performance Center (6-7:45 pm) in the campus of the University of North Alabama.   This event will focus on Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, an eminent Indian Classical Vocalist and his team consisting of Pt. Mohan Shyam Sharma  on the Pakhawaj, & Laurence Bastit, and Qamar Dagar on the Tanpura. The concert at UNA is the beginning of their USA tour this year.  They have enthralled audiences throughout the world. They will be performing in New York, San Francisco and a host of other cities.  In fact, we are honored to be able to host this concert here at UNA.  It has all been made possible because of funds made available by the Student Allocation Funding.
