Costa Rica

The Adventures Begin!

After some plane delays due to weather, we finally made it to Costa Rica! The first night we stayed at a Bed & Breakfast. It defenitely wasn’t an American Bed & Breakfast, and my roomates and I had some battles with bugs, but we were able to get a great night’s rest and wake up to a beautiful view of the mountains and clouds of Costa Rica.

That next day, our chaperone from CPI, Lamar, took us on a walking tour of San Joaquin de Flores. It’s no question that our own two feet will be our main transportation and that’s perfectly fine with me! We went to our school, Centro Panamericano de Idiomas (CPI), for testing to determine what our level of classes would be. After lunch, our families started to pick us up. My family had been on vacation, so I wasn’t picked up until around 5:30. However, I’m not complaining becuase my friend Bailey wasn’t picked up until 10:00 that night!

I have a wonderful host family here in Costa Rica! My papatica’s name is Eduardo and my mamatica’s name is Moraima. They are both around 35 years old have have two children. Nazareth is a spunky 5 year old and Camila is a cute, litte 20 month old who is a precious sight to see! Moraima owns a child-care center in her courtyard and it is pretty impressive! I’ve noticed that lots of Ticans run businesses from their homes. Eduardo is a marketing manager and is gone by the time I get up every morning. They have given me my own room complete with internet, cable TV (with some American channels), and a bathroom. I was not expecting these kinds of luxuries! My paptica told me that this is my house and anytime I ask permission to do something he says it again. He said there are very few rules and they are only there to protect their children. It feels like a home away from home!

Yesterday was our first full day of Tican activity! We met at La Iglesia de San Jaoquin at 7:15. It was everyone’s first day to walk around Heredia by ourselves and I loved it! It seemed surreal that I was actually here. It’s been something I’ve been looking forward to for almost 2 years and I am loving every second of it. On our tour of Heredia, we rode a public bus and visited two markets. I could write an entire post just about the markets! We were able to try all kinds of exotic fruit native to Costa Rica and that was an experience in itself!

We then went back to CPI for our first day of classes. Before we started, some of  us played a little soccer and volleyball! We really do have a fun group! They have been so much fun to get to know and it’s only Day 4! We got assigned our classes and and I am in class with Ivann, Joe, and Jesse. I have no doubt that they will make classes fun!

Amanda Price

My name is Amanda Price. I am a 20-year-old junior at the University of North Alabama majoring in nursing with a minor in Spanish. I am from Florence, Alabama and am proud to call this beautiful city my home! I had never been out of the country before until this summer. Just last month I had the opportunity to travel to Senegal and it changed the way I view the world. After my experience in Senegal I have a new appreciation for the importance of cultural immersion and the value of language. I now have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica where I will be taking Spanish classes along with other UNA students! I am excited to be a “Tican” for a few weeks and will take every opportunity that this trip throws at me (except for bungee jumping)!
