Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio

On the weekends we have the opportunity to take excursions with a guide from CPI. These are weekends full of fun and absent of homework! However, the learning never stops. There are always opportunities to use Spanish no matter where we go in this beautiful country.

We met at the church at 6:00 a.m. I had told my mamatica not to worry about fixing me breakfast and I’m glad I did because I was pushing to get out the door that morning! After driving on the bus for a while, we stopped to get breakfast. I don’t eat gallo pinto for breakfast much at my house, so I was quick to order that at the restaurant. Gallo pinto is basically a mixture of rice and beans for breakfast. It sounds crazy, but it’s oddly addicting and delicious! After breakfast, we piled on the bus again and made our way to Manuel Antonio National Park. This place could also be named the most beautiful place in Costa Rica. We hiked to the beach and along the way saw monkeys, sloths, and frogs. Monkeys are infamous in this park. Although no one from our group had any incidents, the monkeys are known for joining together and stealing the food of the tourists!

The beach was truly an incredible sight to see! Light blue, gorgeous waters and mountains all around you. It truly was paradise. As I swam out in the water I couldn’t believe I was actually there. It was just too gorgeous to be real! Our time there was short, but we enjoyed every second of it. Pictures cannot capture the beauty of that place.

We went back to the hotel, swam, and prepared for the evening. That night we went to a gorgeous restaurant for dinner. This restaurant also had a pool and a dance floor. Although we didn’t use the pool, we definitely used the dance floor! We were able to use what learned in a dance class earlier that week at school. After a while of dancing to lots of Latino music, the DJ gave us some music that we hear everyday  in USA. That night is definitely one of my favorite memories from this trip. Anyone who really knows me knows that I love to dance! I’m a horrible dancer, but I love it!

The next morning we went to a public beach. We had 2 hours until we had to be back on the bus. Some people went to the shops while others headed straight towards the ocean. After shopping a while, Briana started asking who would want to ride the banana boat. Bailey, Ivann, Travis, Luisa, Briana, Justin, Laura, and I all experienced one of the greatest thrills of this trip! Seriously, it was almost as intense as bungee jumping.

We arrived back in San Joaquin around 5:00 and went back to our host homes. It was a very busy and short trip, but a very enjoyable one. Weekend excursions are definitely a perk of this wonderful learning experience!

Amanda Price

My name is Amanda Price. I am a 20-year-old junior at the University of North Alabama majoring in nursing with a minor in Spanish. I am from Florence, Alabama and am proud to call this beautiful city my home! I had never been out of the country before until this summer. Just last month I had the opportunity to travel to Senegal and it changed the way I view the world. After my experience in Senegal I have a new appreciation for the importance of cultural immersion and the value of language. I now have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica where I will be taking Spanish classes along with other UNA students! I am excited to be a “Tican” for a few weeks and will take every opportunity that this trip throws at me (except for bungee jumping)!
