Hola! Today we are going to a local open air market here in San Joaquin. It’s a weekly thing every Friday starting at 9ish and lasts all day. I feel so embarrassed because I was walking around taking videos and talking to the camera and people were either ducking out of the way or looking at me like a was crazy for being excited about fruit. But I really do love fruit. I eat it for breakfast everyday. The first time that I went was an activity for UNA and we had … // Read more
I just wanted to write a quick post about the typhoon. For those of you who don’t know a typhoon is the same thing as a hurricane in the states. It’s called different things in different parts of the world. (If you didn’t know this don’t feel bad I had to google it after every one kept talking about preparing for the typhoon :)) Friday night on our way to the hotel the wind was very high. Buildings had put tape on the glass to keep the windows from breaking (Idk how it works). Things like the bird in the house that could … // Read more
While in Taiwan, I have noticed that some things are universal while others or not. Education definitely is. However the process is different in Taiwan. At China Medical University they have classes from early in the morning to very late at night. They also have a school bell to begin and dismiss class, like a high school in America. Knowledge is so important to the Taiwanese culture. The desire to be well educated originates from Confucius. Every major city has a temple in his honor. He is singly the most important figure in the drive for all Taiwanese people to be educated. Although the … // Read more
The Beach!!!!! Hola everyone! Today I’m taking you all to the beach! Yeah, soaking up the sun. The place that we went to is called Manuel Antonio and it is in a national reserve, which I thought was pretty amazing. We had to buy tickets to get in because they only allow 1,000 people to come in a day and it took about forty minutes to walk there because we were looking at all of the animals and bugs. Usually, if you visit by yourself, then you would hire a trail guide to point things out and look at stuff … // Read more
Hi fellow adventurers! Today I’m going to take you to a mall in Heredia where you can see some pretty big similarities between Costa Rica and the US. It was kinda nice to go and eat American style food because while I love Casados, I was definitely wanting a sandwich and chips. We were going to see a movie, but unfortunately we were late and they were sold out, so we explored the mall instead. It’s cool though because that means that will probably go again sometime with Dr. Infanger. Just click the link above and I hope you … // Read more
We’ve had a few half days here and there where we have requested books and started our research and planning, but TODAY was our first full day at The British Library. I touched and read books and manuscripts that were hundreds of years old, and really made progress on my project. You know those libraries people storm frantically into in movies, trying to save someone or run from the bad guys? Well, I was expecting someone to run in shouting because that is exactly what the reading rooms are like. The past few days have been just as busy as … // Read more
It’s the night before we are going to leave and I am beyond excited! I have been reading about Costa Rica since my Spanish 352 class, so getting to be able to go is a dream for me. Yeah for one check on my bucket list! This is my first time being outside of the country, but I think that this is a perfect first because I will be going to a school (CPI) and living with a host family. I’m nervous because I have not spoken or used the language in a year and a half, but I’m sure … // Read more
All of us London-ers are finally together. A few of our group had a few minor problems: getting stuck in the airport for four days, only having one pair of clothes, no shower, etc., so after arriving, everyone was just thankful for a hot shower and food. We’ve been on the go since we arrived. After successfully maneuvering the tube, a scavenger hunt, walking seven miles in four hours with Dr. Bibbee on Independence Day (slight exaggeration, but it felt like it), seeing Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Macbeth in The Globe (amazing), starting our research at The British Library, walking around Westminster Abbey and … // Read more
Today/tonight (depending on how you look at it) is the day/night! I cannot believe it has finally arrived…I am both nervous and excited. Let’s go with apprehensive. Not knowing what to expect is providing me with the same sense of thrill I get from a roller coaster. Packing for over two weeks in a different country was a real experience on it’s own…but two suitcases and one carry-on later I had accomplished it. Since I have only flown once before (for ~30 minutes), flying internationally will definitely be an experience. I expect that navigating the airports will be a feat of its own. My six hour layover in Korea … // Read more
Arriving at the Dallas airport in America was such a wonderful feeling. I had never been so proud to be an American or so proud to be back home. I had missed the freedom and the food more than words could express. After waiting in line for over an hour to recheck our bags, a few of us sat down and had a phenomenal Mexican meal. I followed that meal with Starbucks, and it was filled with sugar and love. I was so happy. The plane ride to Huntsville was short and sweet. I loved flying at night! … // Read more
